The Nauru Bureau of Statistics has published a new report on the country’s 2024-25 Household Income and Expenditure Survey.

The Nauru Household Income and Expenditure Survey (HIES) 2024–2025 marks a significant milestone in our ongoing commitment to understanding and improving the economic and social well-being of our people. As the third national HIES conducted in Nauru—following the inaugural survey in 2006 and the second in 2013/14—this edition continues a vital tradition of evidence-based policymaking and inclusive development.

Household surveys such as the HIES are essential tools for capturing the living conditions, consumption patterns, and income dynamics of our population. They provide the foundation for informed decisions across government, development partners, and civil society. The ideal frequency for conducting a HIES is every five years, ensuring timely and relevant data to monitor progress, evaluate policy impact, and respond to emerging challenges. While the gap between surveys has varied, the 2024–2025 HIES reaffirms our commitment to regular and rigorous data collection.

The results of this survey will serve the Nauru Bureau of Statistics (NBS) in several critical areas. They will support the rebasing of the Consumer Price Index (CPI), ensuring that inflation measurement reflects current household consumption patterns. The data will also be embedded into the rebase of the NationalAccounts, strengthening the accuracy and relevance of macroeconomic indicators. Furthermore, the survey will enable the derivation of poverty measures, helping to assess the severity and distribution of poverty across the country—an essential step toward targeted social and economic interventions.
